Plastic Surgeons of Northern Arizona has introduced 3D areola tattooing, offering breast reconstruction patients a new option for restoring a natural-looking areola after surgery.
The new service will be led by Kelly Patterson, PA-C, who completed 100 hours of advanced medical tattooing and nipple-areola tattoo training through the Housley Institute. Patterson will perform the tattooing for breast reconstruction patients as well as individuals seeking revision or aesthetic restoration.
“3D areola tattooing can give patients a sense of completion and confidence at the end of a long journey,” Patterson said. “It’s an honor to help restore something so personal in a way that looks natural and authentic to them.”
The 3D tattooing technique uses shading, color theory, and detailed pigment work to create the illusion of depth and texture on the skin. The service is designed for patients recovering from mastectomy, gender-affirming top surgery, trauma, congenital conditions, or cosmetic breast procedures.
Adam Boettcher, M.D., a partner at Plastic Surgeons of Northern Arizona, said the addition of 3D areola tattooing aligns with the practice’s emphasis on comprehensive reconstructive care.
“Introducing this service allows us to support patients through the final stage of restoration,” Boettcher said. “Kelly’s advanced training ensures they receive a safe, coordinated, and aesthetically focused experience.”
A 2021 study in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery reported that patients who undergo nipple-areola complex reconstruction, including tattooing, experience significantly higher satisfaction and psychosocial well-being than those who do not.
Consultations for 3D areola tattooing are available at the practice’s Flagstaff office. Patients may call 928-774-2300 or request an appointment online.
