Whatever the reason for thinking about breast augmentation, there are many questions that come up when considering and planning for the procedure. Read on below for answers on what’s involved before, during, and after a breast augmentation at Plastic Surgeons of Northern Arizona.
What Can I Expect From Breast Augmentation Surgery?
Before breast augmentation surgery at Plastic Surgeons of Northern Arizona, a consultation will be held with one of our experienced surgeons. In this consultation, you will have the opportunity to explain exactly what results you are expecting from breast augmentation. During this conversation, our surgeons will determine if the end goal is achievable and will make professional suggestions as needed.
The consultation is also a great time to bring along a partner or friend to ask any and all questions that may be on everyone’s mind. Chances are that you’ve done quite a bit of research but there may be some specific information you were unable to find. Our surgeons love answering your questions and it can be reassuring hearing information comes from them rather than the internet. Our main goal for the consultation is to make you feel as comfortable as possible with the procedure. We will explain exactly how the process will proceed and if you need more time, we are happy to schedule another consultation to maximize your comfort.
Once both parties are satisfied with the decisions made about the breast augmentation, the surgery will be scheduled. All patient preparation and expectations will be set by the surgeon, depending on the specific situation. Sometimes this would include adjusting current medications or stopping the use of recreational drugs. If you have more questions after the consultation and before the procedure, don’t hesitate to ask. Our staff and surgeons will do everything in their power to properly prepare you for this exciting, life-changing procedure.
“Dr. Boettcher is exceptional in many ways. I will start with his bedside manner. He is kind, and I mean truly kind. I have worked in Healthcare for 20 years and trust me when I say that he is a unicorn! He is an excellent plastic surgeon with TWO ears! His uses them both to actively listen to his patients and in this case, I was that patient. He took the necessary to ensure my concerns were not addressed but acted upon. He is an excellent surgeon, and an equally excellent human being.” – 5-Star Review on Google My Business
On the day of the breast augmentation, expect to arrive a little early to complete all necessary paperwork. If feeling unwell days before or on the day of surgery, it is important to immediately contact your surgeon or the front office staff. If you have a weakened immune system, surgery is not advised because your body will have a more difficult time healing and fighting off infections.
This is what to expect from a typical breast augmentation procedure:
- Final check and incision marks will be made to ensure proper results.
- Anesthesia will be administered.
- The initial incisions will be made, all of which were previously discussed in the consultation. There are a few areas in which the surgeon may decide to make the incision. Depending on the expected results, incision options may be along the areolar edge (peri-areolar incision), in the armpit (axillary incision), and the fold under the breast (inframammary fold). The incision under the breast is most common.
- Once the proper incision has been made, your surgeon will place the implant and position based on desired results.
- After the implant placement has been made to the surgeon’s satisfaction, the incisions will be sutured closed.
The entire procedure typically takes 60-90 minutes.

Immediately after the procedure, you will typically stay in our care for a couple of hours. We will wrap your breasts with gauze and bandage and thoroughly explain how to properly dress your breasts while they are healing. Our staff will also explain how to administer any medications prescribed to you.
We will remind you of the follow-up appointment made before the procedure and that, if you have any questions or concerns, you should call your surgeon right away. Expect to lay low for a few days to assist with the healing and to reduce pain caused by movement. In most cases, we will advise you not to participate in any vigorous physical activity for a few weeks but you may be able to return to normal activity in several days. You may expect bruising and swelling to be resolved within one to two weeks
