Cleft lip and cleft palate are two of the most common birth defects in North America, and occur during fetal development when the right and/or left sides of the lip, and/or the roof of the mouth fail to grow together. Children can be born with either a cleft lip, a cleft palate, or both. Children born with these defects, in addition to the abnormal appearance of their face and mouth, often have problems with their teeth, feeding, hearing, and speech as they grow.
Cleft lip and cleft palate surgery closes the separation in the lip and upper mouth, resulting in both normal appearance and function. The initial surgery is usually done when the child is about ten weeks old. For cleft lip, the surgeons at Plastic Surgeons of Northern Arizona will make incisions on either side of the cleft, or separation, to create flaps that are then drawn together and stitched closed. For a cleft palate, incisions are made in the upper mouth on either side of the cleft. Special techniques are then used to reposition the muscle as well as the soft and hard components of the palate. The flaps are then sewn together, usually along the midline of the mouth, allowing for normal feeding and speech development. As the child develops, additional surgeries may be needed. All of these options will be discussed with you in detail during your initial consultation.
Cleft lip and palate surgery is performed at Flagstaff Medical Center, located across the street from the Plastic Surgeons of Northern Arizona building in Flagstaff. Recovery time varies, but it usually takes a couple of weeks for the swelling to subside.
