Women with very large breasts can suffer from a wide range of physical problems including back and neck pain, skin irritation, shoulder grooving, difficulty breathing, and poor posture. Emotionally, these women often feel self-conscious about their condition which can lead to social anxiety. Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammaplasty, alleviates these symptoms by removing fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts in order to make them smaller, firmer, and lighter.
Due to the fact that the procedure relieves many patient difficulties, breast reduction surgery has one of the highest levels of customer satisfaction. Depending on the amount of tissue removed, health insurance companies will often cover this procedure. The likelihood that your health insurance will cover breast reduction can be determined after meeting with the doctor for a complete consultation.
During surgery, your surgeon will make an anchor shaped or vertical incision going down the center of the breast, and under the lower curve, removing fat and glandular tissue. He will then trim the areola to reduce the size, placing it higher in a more natural position for your new, smaller breast. Drains are sometimes put in the outer edge of each breast, but these are removed after two to three days. Your chest is wrapped in Ace bandages, and for the first week it is recommended that you sleep with your chest elevated, and not lift anything heavier than a pound or your arms over your head in order to reduce bleeding and swelling. Oral pain medication will be prescribed for any discomfort.
The surgery is performed at Northern Arizona SurgiCenter, our privately owned, fully licensed, certified, and AAAHC-accredited ambulatory surgery center located in the lower level of the Plastic Surgeons of Northern Arizona building in Flagstaff. Recovery time varies, but most patients can return to driving within four to five days although it may take several months for your new breasts to settle into their final appearance.
