Spider veins are small clusters of unsightly red, blue or purple veins that appear on the thighs, calves and ankles of women, often causing them to avoid showing their legs. A common cosmetic concern, it is estimated that nearly half of the female population, as well as many men, suffer from spider veins.
A number of factors contribute to the development of spider veins including heredity, pregnancy, hormonal shifts, weight gain, and prolonged sitting or standing. Luckily, spider veins are easily treatable with sclerotherapy, an injection of sclerosing solution into the veins, which causes them to collapse and become less visible.
At Plastic Surgeons of Northern Arizona, sclerotherapy is performed as an outpatient procedure in our offices, and treatment takes anywhere from between fifteen to forty-five minutes. There is little to no down time, and patients can usually resume their normal activities immediately following treatment.
