There are many wonderful things about being pregnant, but most women would agree that stretch marks are not one of them. Usually located on the abdomen, outer thigh, and buttock area, stretch marks result from the stretching of the skin either due to pregnancy or rapid weight gain/loss. Genetics can also play their part. If your mother had stretch marks then you probably will as well.
At Plastic Surgeons of Northern Arizona, our surgeons and aestheticians use the Palomar 1540 laser handpiece to lessen these unsightly marks. The Palomar 1540 is the only laser that is approved by the FDA for the treatment of stretch marks. It works by targeting your stretch mark scar tissue with laser heat, stimulating the generation of collagen which helps your skin to repair itself. Multiple treatments with the Palomar 1540 are normally required to obtain the desired improvements.
The laser causes the thin, stretched skin, often either pale or reddish in color, to thicken thus returning to a more normal appearance. Possible side affects of laser treatment of stretch marks include some discomfort due to the heat of the laser, which is applied incrementally to avoid burning the skin, as well a temporary, slight darkening of the skin in the treated area.
